Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Re: How old were you at your first Dead show?

15 years old. Greensboro, North Carolina October 9, 1983 with my best friend and his hippie parents. Tried to go twice before but didn't make it. I grew up in a family of Dead Heads who had seen shows starting in the mid seventies so I was very familiar with the music and behaviors of said crowd. Felt at home and welcomed. I ran into several people that I knew from my high school so that also helped give the scene some contextual point of reference that was comforting considering how high I was. The show wasn't sold out and they didn't sell tickets for the upper deck. I remember feeling extremely stoned and watching the silhouettes of two women dancing in the upper deck portals; one on each side of the stage, and being amazed that they danced the whole time. Saw the GD 81 times and JGB 56 times with a handful of other dead related shows in between. Last shows were the two Seattle shows and the three Eugene shows in June 1994.

As far as that whole 'it' conversation I just remember that in Central North Carolina in the early eighties Dead Heads were far and in between. That said, when you met somebody that liked the music they were an instant friend whether they had seen shows or not.
